Water is so important that life cannot exist without it. It plays a vital role to almost every function in our body making up 70 percent or two thirds of our total body weight. Our body loses water when we urinate or sweat, even we breathe, therefore, it is essential to replace the water we  have lost to keep hydrated. Without water, your body would stop working properly and you cannot survive more than a few days without it.


Importance of Drinking Enough Water

Water is the substance of life. All living things must have water to survive. It is the most important thing you can put inside your body.

Water is the healthiest choice for quenching your thirst because it has no calories and sugars. Your body needs it to be able to work properly and to prevent dehydration.

You need water to regulate your body temperature and provide the means for nutrients to travel to your tissues and organs. It also helps carry oxygen to your cells, get rid of waste and protects your joints and organs.

How Much Water Do You Really Need?

Each day, the human body loses 237 millimeters of water in the vapor exhaled from the lungs, 1.4 liters which come down the toilet and half a liter from sweating. The fluid we lost in our body has to be replaced by drinking enough water.

All the time, we hear that we should drink eight glasses of water per day. In the general rule, however, you should drink half your body weight in ounces of water everyday. If you weigh 200 pounds, you would need to drink 100 ounces of water per day if you are not doing anything strenuous. If you are working out rigorously, you are going to need to add more water to that 100 ounces.

What Happens When You Do Not Drink Enough Water?

If you do not drink enough water, you can impair every aspect of your physiology. People who drink insufficient amounts of water incur excess body fat, poor muscle tone and size, decreased digestive efficiency and organ function, increased toxicity in the body and joint and muscle soreness.

Drinking insufficient amounts of water may lead to water retention. Your body needs to retain water to compensate.

You may suffer from dehydration if you do not drink enough water. Dehydration means that your body does not have as much as water and fluids as it should. It can be mild, moderate or severe, depending on how much your body weight is lost through fluids.

When you become severely dehydrated, you no longer have enough fluid in your body to carry blood to your organs, and you may go into shock, which is a life-threatening condition.

You would know that you do not drink enough water if your urine is in a darker shade of yellow, when you stand up and feel dizzy, you see that your tongue is white when you stick it out, there is less production in tears or sweat, or you lack focus.

Always make sure to drink enough water to keep yourself hydrated. When you are hydrated, your body will function well.
